Over the last week I have been reading The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. As you may expect, it didn't really wet my appetite for the book but it had a good message to it. It is about a man that gets turned into a cockroach and his family are discouraged by the fact that he has turned into a vermin.
The main character is called Gregor Samsa and the burden of the responsibility of his whole family is on his shoulders. When Samsa turns into a cockroach, the family have to find ways of earning money to pay for their own costs. Samsa was locked in his room for the rest of his life, when he finally battled his nerves and bursted out and that was when he was attacked by his own father by apples.
This is said to be the most important pieces of writing in the 20th century. To be honest, but I don't think it is personally. My reasoning for this is that the story revolves around Samsa in the beginning but as the story evolves, the story starts to focus on the family, especially Grete, the sister of Samsa. This confused me and annoyed me a bit as well because I wanted to know more about Gregor rather than the family. It would be obvious that the family would be distraught but you wouldn't be able to predict the victims' pain would you?
